Four Star Leadership Alumni Receive Scholarships for Community Improvement Challenge

For Immediate Release: June 1, 2020

Three students have been awarded scholarships from Four Star Leadership for their community improvement initiatives. All three students attended Four Star Leadership’s world-class program in July 2019 where they, and 67 of their classmates, were issued the Understanding Community Understanding challenge by Ret. General Tommy Franks and Joe Crookham, president of Musco Lighting and Four Star sponsor.

At the beginning of the program, all Four Star Leadership students were asked to identify issues in their schools and communities and develop a plan to solve those problems. Students were encouraged to consider social media approaches, team building and collaboration with peers to share ideas.

The first-place winner from Folsom, California, is Rhitishah Yuva Raju. She received a $5,000 scholarship for creating a mental health organization, Mediora, which focuses on decreasing stigmas against mental health, bridging the gender and minority gap in STEM fields and creating resources and methods to identify and solve mental health issues.

The second-place winner is Dorcas Olatunji from New Castle, Delaware. She received a $2,500 scholarship for her creation of STU-Lead, a platform to empower students in Kent County Delaware to best communicate with local leaders in education and become more informed citizens.

The third-place winner from Clearwater, Florida, is Andre Benoit. He received a $1,500 scholarship for creating Resume Train, an organization that aids troubled teenagers who have committed misdemeanors in getting back on track through employment, building life skills and guidance through the criminal justice system.

“We were impressed by all of the students that participated in this challenge,” said retired Gen. Tommy Franks. “Our three scholarship winners went above and beyond with their projects and made an impact on their communities. We are honored to have them represent our program and to award them with a scholarship to assist in growing their organizations.”
