What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
I am attending Morehouse College as a political science major. After school, I plan to study law and become an attorney.

Tell us about any of your recent achievements, awards or scholarships! How did Four Star Leadership help you achieve those?
I was the  Southeastern Region Teen President of Jack and Jill of America incorporated. I also earned a total of $1.4 million in scholarship awards for school. Four Star taught me so much about leadership and having to make difficult decisions. During my time that week I remember navigating tough challenges with my teammates that grew my leadership skills.

Cassady Smith Credits Four Star as Challenging and Rewarding
Picture
Cassady Smith attended the Four Star Leadership Program with General Tommy Franks in 2015.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
No leader has had everything handed to them - at Four Star I got to hear from accomplished leaders about how they overcame struggles to become who they are today. Many of them had common core values which were instilled in us throughout the program. It was a great way to discover who I was as a person and whom I wanted to be as a leader for others. Being surrounded by other students just as passionate and kind, we developed a great community of friends in the short time we had. It’s definitely an experience I’ll never forget.

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
This program is challenging and rewarding in all the best ways. You get to have personal conversations and shake hands with people who have done amazing things. At the same time, you’re making friends with the next generation of leaders. Anyone who has the opportunity should absolutely apply.

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
I’m currently a Physics Ph.D. student at Yale University researching quantum computing. After Yale, I plan to either work in industry or go into science policy, as I’m very passionate about the environment.

Tell us about any of your recent achievements, awards or scholarships! How did Four Star Leadership help you achieve those?
I was a very active leader in my undergraduate institution as a 2-year president of the physics club and a 3-year residential advisor. I also worked as a professional in the aerospace industry before coming to Yale. Four Star really helped me discover my character and my own values and beliefs, as well as how to respectfully communicate those to others. These values are a strong part of my identity, and I believe they have helped me achieve great things, and even greater things to come.

Kenneth Do Says Four Star Changed His Life
Picture
Kenneth Do attended the Four Star Leadership Program with General Tommy Franks in 2021.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:

Four Star Leadership really changed my life and me as a person but, most importantly, as a leader. Hearing from inspirational speakers like Warren Martin and Michelle Smith taught me valuable lessons such as that it takes true leadership to stand out of the crowd and that adversity is what makes us great and unique. Visiting the State Capitol and having dinner at the Governor's Mansion was truly a once in a lifetime experience and breathtaking. Visiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial and the General Tommy Franks Museum was a very humbling experience and made me realize how lucky we are just to be alive and furthered my respect for our veterans and soldiers fighting for our safety. We also had the chance to participate in an ethics bowl and speech competition which strengthened my public speaking skills and helped me to realize that we don't all have to have the same opinions to be right. To conclude, Four Star Leadership was an awesome experience that I will never forget. Spending a week with leaders from all over the world and meeting leaders like General Tommy Franks, Major General Rita Aragon and primary spokesperson Ari Fleischer made this conference remarkable and an experience that I'll never forget.

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
"If you have the passion to build others up before you, this is for you. If you have the passion to stand out of the crowd and do something extraordinary, this is for you. If you have the passion to persevere and make an impact on others' lives, this is for you. You have a choice, whether to take a shot at a once in a lifetime opportunity that will shape your life forever or, to let this opportunity slide. Now, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT." - Kenneth Do, Four Star 2021 Alumni

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
I am currently a junior attending Ruben S. Ayala High School and plan on hopefully being appointed to my dream college, the United States Military Academy.

Tell us about any of your recent achievements, awards or scholarships! How did Four Star Leadership help you achieve those?
I have recently started planning on creating two clubs, The Military Introduction Program and Four Star Leadership Society. I had initially thought about creating a military club on my campus as my school doesn't offer JROTC. Attending Four Star Leadership and hearing the full story and great achievements of General Tommy Franks truly inspired me greatly. When I got back home from Four Star, I noticed I had great notes and resources in my notebook aside from the amazing experience. I decided that I wanted to share what I learned and use my notebook as sort of a guideline and tool for me to teach other students about leadership and the 4 C's. As of now, I am still planning and gathering members to join my two clubs but, I am very excited to see how we'll progress in the future.

Shravya Kakulamarri Learned Important Leadership Skills While Attending Four Star
Picture
Shravya Kakulamarri attended the Four Star Leadership Program with General Tommy Franks in 2015.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
On July 14, 2015, we visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. We all gathered around as the tour guide went through each part of the Museum, explaining parts of the attack. When we approached the room filled with items that belonged to the victims, I could hear a sudden intake of breath from every single person. We all stood in silence, staring at the glass that showcased the possessions –teddy bears, journals, drawings and many other memorabilia. There was only one emotion felt amongst all of us at that moment: grief. All 50 of us were from different parts of the nation – Washington, Missouri, Texas, New York, Kentucky and Pennsylvania were only a few. We all grew up in different places, with different people, surrounded by different cultures, yet we were all able to show the same emotion at that moment. Mourning the loss suffered by the City brought us together emotionally. This emotional bond cannot be broken. Feelings are a universal language. Despite our different backgrounds, we all felt the same way towards an extremely tragic and traumatic event. Fifty of the nation's most talented leaders mourning the loss Oklahoma suffered more than 20 years ago was an unforgettable sight. The hope in our eyes to make the world a better place was evident. I recall fragments of the jam-packed week, but the memory of visiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum will remain intact in my mind forever. Seeing this commonality amongst all of us glued the broken pieces of my heart back together. I am proud to say that I am part of the youth of this era that has so much love and many ideas for the world around it.

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
When reflecting upon my time at Four Star, I feel a deep sense of gratification for my experiences, the incredibly accomplished people I had the honor of meeting, and the friends I made. General Tommy Franks is one of the smartest and most down-to-earth individuals I have met. Having the opportunity to meet and speak to General Franks pushed me to become a change agent within my community. This experience will be one where you grow in ways you never thought possible.

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
I attended Rice University studying Health Sciences, Global Health Technologies and Biochemistry & Cell Biology. The summer after my freshman year of college, I spent two months in Brazil researching and engineering global health technologies at Hospital de Câncer de Barretos. In September of 2018, I presented at a TEDx Conference to over 500 people about my experiences in Brazil, differences in healthcare, and what we are capable of doing collectively to help individuals in low-resource settings. Upon graduation I plan on pursuing a Masters in Bioengineering and then attending medical school. I hope to spend my time as a physician and engineer in low-resource settings. My experience at Four Star pushed me to become a change agent within my community, and I will be forever grateful for this experience.

Mark Viloria attended Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks in 2018.

My time at Four Star created some of my best memories from high school. The lessons I learned have helped me both as a leader and as a person, but the best part of the program was the people. To this date, I have had some of the best conversations of my life with my friends from that week. I am constantly amazed and motivated by the achievements of my peers from Four Star, and having been a part of that group, it helps me believe I can truly make a positive difference in the world.

I'm currently attending the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, and I plan to go into management consulting post-graduation.

Tell us about any of your recent achievements, awards or scholarships! How did Four Star Leadership help you achieve those?
Applying what I learned during Four Star Leadership helped me get a few scholarships for college. I had an idea to start a kindness initiative called "Kind is Kool" in my school district, and I was able to teach and work with more than 1,000 elementary schoolers about the importance of kindness. The best advice I got was from General Tommy Franks: we all see problems in the world, but what are YOU going to do about it?

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
Four Star Leadership has opened my eyes to the importance of leadership in a time where the only constant is change. One of the highlights of the program was meeting H.M. King Abdullah II of Jordan and understanding how he has utilized his leadership skills to maintain peace in his country despite being located amid a war zone in the Middle East. It was also great listening to the challenges General Tommy Franks has faced in making decisions that impacted the lives of thousands of people around the globe.

How has Four Star affected your life and shaped your career?
Having had the chance to meet with people from across the United States to discuss some of the more pressing topics and debate most fitting solutions, I found myself leaving with valuable knowledge, a quest for developing a world where understanding and inclusion are closer to the core of its values and most importantly, a group of friends who have been both challenging me to grow and encouraging me to chase my ultimate potential.

Julianna Hogan Says Four Star Leadership Was Empowering
Picture
Julianna Hogan attended Four Star Leadership in 2020, which was held virtually. Julianna reports back on her experience and her plans for the future.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership
My experience was not what I expected. Going to a leadership camp virtually was definitely a new challenge for me. Even though I would have loved to experience the program in person, I was so grateful for the knowledge and empowerment I got from attending the program. I discovered many new leadership skills that I can implement in my everyday life. I also enjoyed working with people from all across the world during our group ethics project. It was amazing to hear other people’s opinions about the topic at hand. I appreciated every moment and lesson that I had the privilege of experiencing.

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
I would say go for it. I was always a shy person growing up, but joining AFJROTC and being able to attend this program was life changing. You don’t even have to be in a military affiliated program to get so much knowledge and valuable lessons from the experience. Always take chances because you never know what opportunities could be in your future like this amazing program was in mine.

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
Right now I am waiting for my position for an intern at one of Congressmen Mike Garcia’s offices. I am also a flight commander in AFJROTC at my high school. In the future I want to attend the Air Force academy or AFROTC at a college and serve my country. I also want to help people not only by serving, but by becoming a lawyer and making a difference in this world.

Tell us about any of your recent achievements, awards or scholarships. How did Four Star Leadership help you achieve those?
I was hired as an intern in my local Congressman’s office. This is a huge achievement and stepping stone to get into a service academy or a good college. With the lessons that Four Star taught me, I was able to get this position. Without the lessons and the empowerment of Four Star I don’t think I would have had the confidence to even submit my resume. Four Star also helped me with applications because I am able to put such a prestigious program on my resume. Most importantly, Four Star has given me life lessons that I use in my everyday life to obtain future achievements.

I am graduating from Purdue University in May 2020. I am weighing three job offers and I am excited about my future career in the food and agribusiness industry.

What have been some of your greatest accomplishments since attending Four Star?
Four Star opened so many doors for me. I think the main takeaway I had was the development of my speaking and problem solving skills. The experience I had set me up for success in other areas. I was blessed to get a full ride to Purdue University and go on four study abroad trips that were completely paid through scholarships. I would attribute some that success to my experience at Four Star. The program laid a foundation for me to achieve excellence.

Kelly McGovern Shares How Four Star Leadership Changed Her Life
Picture
Kelly attended Four Star Leadership in 2019.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:

Four Star Leadership was one of the best weeks of my life. Entering the program, I was a little worried, as I knew absolutely no one. By the last day, I was crying saying my goodbyes to people who had become family in such a short time. If you would have told me that five days could change my entire life, I would not have believed you; and then it happened. In five short days, I met some of the most amazing people, formed unbreakable friendships and was developed into a better leader. I had the opportunity to listen to some of the most amazing speakers, and truly had the time of my life. From playing games in the lounge, to holding an Olympic gold medal, this program offers so many unique once in a lifetime opportunities. To this day, I still talk to my fellow classmates, and I would do anything to be able to experience Four Star again. The memories made and lessons learned stay close to my heart, and will be with me for the rest of my life.

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
If you are looking for an opportunity to change your life, apply to this program. Nothing will compare to how amazing this camp is and how powerful and life changing five days can be. You have nothing to lose by applying, and if you do not get in, do not be afraid to try again next year! In your application, do not be afraid to brag a little bit about yourself. This is your time to shine and to be recognized for your achievements.

What have been some of your greatest accomplishments since attending Four Star?
For my college, I have been awarded a merit scholarship for academics and leadership qualities, and I believe Four Star has helped me gain this scholarship. Additionally, in my NJROTC Unit, I served as our Battalion's S-2 Officer. The skills I learned from my time spent at Four Star made me shine in this position.

Garrett Falkenstine Says Four Star Has Proved Invaluable

Picture
Garrett attended Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks in 2017.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
Four Star Leadership was amazing. I met a ton of new people from different walks of life and was able to make connections, acquaintances and friendships. The speakers were there for us, talking about the skills needed to develop into outstanding and outperforming leaders. Outside of the speakers, the activities we did were outstanding. They helped to develop our team work, communication, information gathering skills and more.

How has Four Star affected your life and shaped your career?
The Four Star Leadership experience has proved invaluable with building confidence, my willingness to step out of the box and explore new horizons in education, extracurricular activities, sports and volunteering. I firmly believe it was a life-changing experience that directly influenced my willingness to seek and achieve educational opportunities. I pursued and was fortunate to be awarded scholarships, grants and other sources of funding that allow me to attend the University of Redlands, in Redlands, California,  which initially seemed unaffordable. I would like to add one more "C" to the four "C's of Leadership; Character, Common Vision, Communication, Caring and ‘Can Do’!"

Tell us how attending Four Star helped you earn career opportunities:
As I mentioned previously, Four Star has allowed me to get into a really good school in California. I am using the skills to get the education to eventually achieve a position in physical therapy. At the university, I got a job in event services from the skills I learned and developed while at Four Star. I work with people every day, and I get the job done well because it is about the customer.

Rushil Desai Learned and Applies the 4 C’s of Leadership

Picture
Rushil Desai attended Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks in 2018.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
My experience at Four Star was the most amazing thing I could ask for. I got meet a lot of new friends that I still actually keep in touch with. The fact that you get to listen to the different and amazing speakers here at Four Star, is astonishing as well. I took all the information and lifestyle skills that each speaker told me about and I’m looking forward to using those to move on to the next chapter of my life.

How has Four Star affected your life and shaped your career?
Four Star affected my life by doing two of the following things. One is allowing me to make friends, from all around the U.S., that I still keep in touch with. From the class of 2018 Four Star we have a group chat, and if anybody needs help with any college applications or just information in general, everyone chips in and talks about what they have done and what we can do. The second thing that Four Star has done is that it taught me the 4 C’s. When each speaker talked about their own style on the 4 C’s it brought light to my eyes on how those can really shape your life. I use the 4 C’s in school, in my community and just overall I use it everywhere. I also soon realized that people are starting to respect me more now than before I attended Four Star.

Tell us how attending Four Star helped you to earn career opportunities:
After attending Four Star, I received a letter in the mail about an opportunity to attend a national security program where I get to experience the different national security careers that are available. I also started to think about joining the military after attending Four Star because I saw how it helped General Franks. I know it can help not just financially, but to help myself to learn a better way of living life.

Kiana White Details A Rewarding Experience

Picture
Kiana attended Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks in 2019.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
I had such an a rewarding experience at Four Star Leadership. My mindset was improved tremendously and I am so open to change from myself, to my school and community. In the Four Star Leadership program I met some wonderful, intelligent and talented young people who share the common vision of becoming a great impact to make the world a much better place.

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
I would tell the future applicants to be very prepared physically and mentally. Not only would you be faced with a lot of walking, but also that a lot of amazing speakers will give you great information that it will seem as if it’s overwhelming. Remember that you have nothing to lose but everything to gain!

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
Hopefully I will take some of the lessons taught to me at Four Star Leadership and share it with some of my fellow student council members during my senior year. I will continue to strive in school by joining clubs, becoming a mentor to my younger peers and continue to stay focused.

Tripp Hankins on Four Star, Ambitions and Goals

Picture
Tripp Hankins attended Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks in 2017. Tripp spoke with us about his experience at the program and the impact it has had on his life.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
It was a time of being with like-minded people (who I still communicate with regularly). I remember being hopeful for the future knowing that I had peers with similar ambitions and visions to my own. There was also something uniquely patriotic about the program which was quite moving. For this reason, my Four Star notebook sits near my Bible, journals, philosophy selection and copy of our founding documents on my bedside table. Being at the heart of the Oklahoma Capitol was also very special. I am a loyal Texan, but hearing the politicians speak about the love of their state makes me patriotic for my own. There was almost a religious component, but because it was not explicit, It gave the Christian undertones great conviction. I'm a Christian and I thought that part was very impactful. To hear from Godly men that they want us to one day bare the torch of our country makes me more resolved in my beliefs and convictions. The spirit of those men gives me a legacy beyond that of my own family to embrace.

How has Four Star affected your life and shaped your career?
It changed the way I scrutinize and trust leadership. I was put on the student search committee for a new Upper School Head and I had a perfect list of necessary leadership traits that I used in my evaluation. I can tell the difference between a good leader and a bad leader and WHY. When I was serving as president of the Model OAS Conference in Washington, D.C., I had the tools necessary to lead well and achieve the common goal of passing proposed resolutions. One of the biggest things I learned at the conference was that one must have true influence and backing when attempting to lead. One shouldn't ramrod something without team support. The skills have become a part of my perspective and how I view people and their roles in my community/group.

What have been some of your greatest accomplishments since attending Four Star?
The program was a wonderful addition to my resume and the leadership components I learned have been instrumental in how I go about my personal day to day business. This in application has helped me craft essays for school and college/scholarship applications. My post-college occupation has not begun, but my infant college career has certainly been impacted by General Franks' program.

Hannah Nunley Learned Vital Communication Skills at Four Star

Picture
Hannah attended Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks in 2016.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
My experience at Four Star Leadership was amazing. I was able to connect with a great group of students who had similar goals as myself. I was also able to meet a lot of wonderful speakers who inspired me to do great things.

How has Four Star affected your life and shaped your career?
Four Star helped me understand how to communicate with others very well. It also helped me get connected with students outside of the United States, and upon spending the week with the international students, I realized that there was more that I was able to do internationally. Four Star helped me to realize that I really wanted to go into international diplomacy in order to help relations between the United States and other countries so that students from these areas would have more opportunities to interact with each other.

Tell us how attending Four Star helped you to earn career opportunities:
Being able to say that I attended Four Star has shown adults in authority that I have the leadership skills needed in order to be a part of certain opportunities. Four Star, and the knowledge I gained, helped me to gain a volunteer spot on a congressional campaign, which could possibly turn into more than just a volunteer position.

Andre Benoit Learned Important Leadership Skills Attending Four Star

Picture
Andre Benoit attended Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks in 2019 and reports having learned important leadership skills.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
Four Star Leadership hosted by General Tommy Franks was truly one of the best experiences of my life. It was incredible meeting people who I know will someday very soon be some of our nation’s leaders. Whether it was meeting political leaders, like Stephanie Bice, or learning about the incredible military experiences of General Tommy Franks, it was all fantastic! Some other highlights included hearing an address at the Senate, eating dinner at the Governor’s Mansion and debating ethics with some awesome people!

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
Go for it and apply! Grades are of course great to mention, but talk about who you are as a person. Tell Four Star what you have done to make our world better. Tell them about extracurricular accomplishments and volunteer experiences you have had.

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
I approach my junior year of high school with the topics of character, common vision, communication and caring. I learned at Four Star that all of these aspects make a great leader and I want to continue to grow with that mindset. I am currently working hard towards my Understanding Community Understanding project and I am very excited to see the results.

My goal is to begin at Georgetown University in the Fall of 2021. I plan on obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Political Economy or Foreign Service. I would like to continue thereafter and pursue a law degree at Georgetown.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
My experience at Four Star was better than I could've imagined. The speakers were truly inspirational in their career, accomplishments and faith. The staff members, honored guests and fellow students were incredibly kind! I learned many small and large things about what a leader is and how those characteristics play in the overall picture of what a good leader is. I was extremely blessed to be a student at the 2019 Four Star Leadership program!

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
Go for it. Apply. You won't regret it. The Four Star Leadership program is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Don't let it slip through your fingers! This program can open up many, many doors in your life and it is up to you to decide if you want that. It takes a vision and determination to accomplish your goals. Going through with this program will prove that you have what it takes to succeed. Why not apply? It will be completely worth it in the end! God bless!

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
I am currently a junior in high school and I plan on staying very busy this year in school, community work, extracurricular activities and Civil Air Patrol. I know that if I want to become a Navy fighter pilot, I will need to push myself to the fullest extent before I get remotely close to my dream job. I will stay focused on my goals and let them drive me, even if I am not feeling particularly motivated. It takes the strongest minds to be the strongest people. It all starts in my head, and once I have the determination and stamina to push through mine and others’ doubts, I have made it halfway.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
My Four Star experience was like no other! I met great speakers and great people that also attended the program. To this day, I still speak with my classmates and the camaraderie is still there. The most important thing that I learned during that week was having good character and courage to take on challenges. Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
My experience at Four Star Leadership was more than what I could ask for. This experience helped me find my way in a way I just cannot explain. Before I applied my sister told me about her experience the year before. She told me that it was amazing and that if I went I would not only learn about leadership, but I would also learn about who I am as a person. Before I went to Oklahoma I had started a Facebook group to get to know some of the people who would be attending Four Star Leadership before we left home and went into unfamiliar territory. When starting that Facebook page, I did not know that some lifelong friendships were beginning. When arriving in Oklahoma I was welcomed by many people and amazing counselors. Throughout the week we learned about the Four C’s to not only achieving a successful career, but life as well. With all the guest speakers that came and spoke to us I learned so much more than I thought I could. The activities, the speakers and the classes all helped me become a better leader and a better person. It also made me realize time is short and I should not take for granted what I have in life because everything could change in an instant. Four Star is an experience that I would not change or take back for a million dollars.

How has Four Star affected your life and shaped your career?
After learning about General Tommy Franks’ Four C’s I have started applying them to my everyday life as a leader at my school and in my community. Four Star influenced my decisions on what I wanted to do when I leave high school. After hearing so many stories and hearing all the guest speakers’ advice I learned that I shouldn’t let the little things hold me back. Four Star has shaped my life by helping me decide on my future. I plan to keep spreading the things I have learned from the prestigious leadership camp.

What have been some of your greatest accomplishments since attending Four Star?
Shortly after going to Four Star I decided to go to college, join a ROTC program and pursue a career in the Air Force. I learned that I always need to strive for what I want and that I shouldn’t give up. Everyone goes through tough times, but you should remember: “It’s a bad day but it’s never a bad life.”

I made 65 new friends from all over the country and even won an award for top persuasive speech. I also met an Olympian, senator, entrepreneurs, corporate CEOs, military leaders, a university president, ministers and governors. While you can tell that someone is a leader by their formal title, that isn’t a complete picture of what a true leader is. This week I learned that leadership is about serving, inspiring and raising even more leaders. This was an unforgettable experience.

In college I  plan to study business, engineering and communications. My plan is to be a successful businesswoman, author and philanthropist. I hope to be able to give back to amazing programs like Four Star which helped me develop so many valuable skills.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
Four Star Leadership was a life-changing experience. My brother attended in 2010, and I was honored to attend three years later. As someone who loved being involved in high school and being a leader, Four Star taught me the skills to become an inspiration to others, and how to hone in on what matters. I have since used those skills in my collegiate career, and the incredible friendships I made with other Four Star recipients still exist to this day.

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
Take advantage of this wonderful and life-changing program, and truly listen to the mentors speak about their experience.

Aaron Jackson Tells How Four Star Leadership Changed Him

Picture
Aaron Jackson attended the Four Star Leadership Program with General Tommy Franks in 2017. He formed friendships with other students from around the United States and around the world. Aaron learned the characteristics of being a leader that helped him develop into a better person. Aaron recently communicated with us about his experience at the program and the impact it has had on his life.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
My experience at Four Star Leadership was amazing. I would describe it as a hectic, mind-blowing and exciting adventure. I was able to form friendships with other students from around the United States and around the world in just a short, but long, week. The plane ride to Oklahoma City alone allowed me to connect with four other students headed to Four Star Leadership and I soon found out that they were amazing people. The entire week allowed me to make friends with random strangers that I will most likely not see for many years. The speakers and collegiate leaders really demonstrated what being a leader is like and it allowed me to understand the characteristics of a leader. I feel like I have developed into a better person and leader than I was before Four Star Leadership.

How has Four Star affected your life and shaped your career?
Four Star has dramatically affected my life since leaving the Oklahoma Christian University campus. I have had people from my school ask me about Four Star because I was in the local news. After Four Star, I was able to go back to my workplace and demonstrate my new knowledge to my coworkers. However, a month later in August of 2017, I was told that we would be moving because my dad is in the military. I would be leaving my town in the second largest state, Texas, and headed to the second smallest state, Delaware. This was a shock to me as I have only moved once before this and it was just 90 minutes away from my previous city. Thanks to Four Star Leadership I felt like I was able to overcome my fears and work with the circumstances I was under. Now, I am applying for my second job and researching new college options on the other side of the nation. Four Star Leadership has made me a much better version of myself.

What have been some of your greatest accomplishments since attending Four Star?
At one of the businesses I applied for, one of the managers had just moved from Oklahoma City and had heard of Four Star Leadership. His knowledge of the program gave the company high expectation of my work ethic and leadership which proved I was worthy of being hired. Right now, I am in the middle of the hiring process and should be an employee by March. Four Star has helped me pursue career opportunities more than I could have dreamed of just a few months after the program.

Klarissa Arreola Found Her Path After Attending Four Star

Picture
Klarissa Arreola was an attendee at Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks in 2015. Klarissa had no idea about how dramatically her life was about to change in just one short week. After attending Four Star she became an inspirational leader to her peers and began developing the map for her future with the United States Air Force. Klarissa recently spoke with us about her experience at the program and the impact it has had on her life.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
I was heavily impacted by the four C's of leadership. I did not do JROTC in high school, but I believe that Four Star gave me a head-start over my fellow Air Force ROTC cadets at Northern Arizona University. From my first day at Four Star, I felt welcome by those who organized the program, as well as welcome with the other students. I made lifelong friends that I still keep in touch with two years later, and I loved seeing Oklahoma and Southern hospitality for the first time! I am pretty sure when I left Oklahoma after about a week in the program, I was saying “y'all” to everyone and somehow had a twinge of a Southern accent!

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
If you get accepted and go, don't hold back. Take what this program has to offer. Take good notes, ask good questions. At that point in my life I was always overthinking what I was going to ask because I felt insecure about how intelligent my questions compared to the others students'. Don't do that! Come out of your shell and embrace the experience by putting yourself out there 24/7. I wish I would have done that a bit more (and also prepared a bit more for the competitions before the program started).

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
I am now a sophomore at Northern Arizona University, studying philosophy, politics and law. My rank in Air Force ROTC is Cadet Third Class, and this upcoming summer in 2018, I will be attending Field Training in Maxwell Air Force Base. Just a month ago, I contracted and swore into the United States Air Force, and so as soon as I get my degree in Spring 2020, I will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force! This semester I am a founding member of the Zeta Chapter of the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority. I am also one of 20 nominated students in my school to be a member of the NAU Presidential Leadership Fellows. I plan on either being an attorney, an OSI agent or an Intelligence officer in the Air Force.

Jake Rhoades Found His Voice at Four Star

Picture
Jake Rhoades traveled to Oklahoma for the Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks from Pennsylvania. From the moment Jake accepted his invitation, he knew his life was about to get exponentially better and he was going to make a difference in the world. Making a friend on the flight and connecting with peers upon arrival helped Jake realize he had made the right decision. Jake had the week of a lifetime with speakers and students from diverse backgrounds and encourages others to take the opportunity. Since the conclusion of Four Star he has taken on more involvement in his community and realized his voice matters. Jake recently spoke with us about the program and the impact it’s had on his life since last summer.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
My Four Star experience was absolutely amazing. Upon arrival, I met fascinating people with diverse backgrounds and life changing experiences. Though the camp is extremely well run and organized, the group of kids that surrounded me truly breathed life into it. Perhaps my favorite aspect of Four Star was the overflowing happiness within each of my peers, which made making friends and debating controversial topics so much more effective and fun. We became so close to one another that we stayed up late, talking about things we were passionate about until the morning. Even writing my speech helped me to discover who I was, and several kids reached out to me afterwards to ask me more about my life. The accomplished people brought in to present really listened to us as much as we listened to their wisdom, and they answered our questions thoughtfully. The point is, everyone at Four Star Leadership cared about me, my opinions, my views and our world. The speakers were inspirational, the activities were fun, the friends will last forever and I had the week of a lifetime. Four Star exceeded my expectations, and pushed me to be the best I can possibly be at whatever I want to do.

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
On my way to Oklahoma, flying by myself across the country from Pennsylvania, I was excited but nervous about the upcoming week. Would it be insanely rigorous? Am I going to miss my family? Most importantly, am I going to fit in? That answer came to me before I even arrived, on my last plane ride before my destination. While trying to catch some rest, a girl sitting across from me tapped me on the shoulder, and shakily asked me if I was attending the Four Star program. I don’t think I’d ever smiled bigger than in that moment. “Yes!” I exclaimed. We then proceeded to introduce ourselves, talk about the upcoming week, and thus a friendship was born. Maria was my first Four Star friend, and we were ready to take on the week together. Throughout the activities, I continued to branch out beyond my comfort zone, and I really made the most of my week by making relationships and connecting with my fellow leaders on a variety of levels. If you are even thinking about applying to Four Star, do it! You won’t regret it! This is a fun week where you learn about yourself and the world that we live in, make a ton of friends from all over the world, and learn how to effectively lead. As long as you are willing to put forth the effort to just be yourself and represent where you came from, the rewards are truly endless, and Four Star will certainly change your life.

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
I am currently working through my senior year and applying to colleges. The week at Four Star is definitely a glimpse into college life, and I am perhaps a bit too eager to pack my bags and head out on my own. In my community, I’m working through an anti-drug and alcohol coalition to help make the youth of my town healthier and more informed, and I am also active in a students for charity organization which helps out local families in need. Going to Four Star inspired me to take initiative in these programs and make things happen. Also, I’ve noticed that I’ve been consistently questioning the morality of all my decisions and taking pride in simply doing the right thing, even if it’s as simple as picking up a piece of trash alongside the road. I see myself in the future leading people with these traits of honesty and integrity, possibly through a political science degree. My week at Four Star really fueled my dreams and now I know that I can, but more importantly, will, change the world.

Cosette Veeder-Shave on Four Star and Her Advice for Future Applicants

Picture
Cosette Veeder-Shave journeyed from New York to participate in the 2017 Four Star Leadership program. During leadership week, Veeder-Shave connected with her peers and quickly developed numerous friendships. Her ability to listen and provide insightful feedback aided her throughout the various workshops offered at Four Star Leadership. She recently spoke with us about the program’s impact and the daily quote that she uses to remind herself of her leadership potential.

Describe your experience at Four Star Leadership:
My Four Star Leadership experience was life changing! At Four Star, I heard from amazing speakers, made new friends and learned valuable lessons. I learned how to write a powerful persuasive speech and how to convey my message to listeners. While I was writing, I had to check my facts, present all my points in an orderly manner and perfect my speech, all in a very short time! My roommate and I helped each other proofread and we listened to [each other]. This is one way I learned to work together with other people. My Ethics Bowl team [wouldn’t have succeeded] if we didn't use our individual strengths to work for the greater benefit of the team. We all have different strengths and weaknesses, but when we work together, we can form a cohesive unit. The moment we were called up as winners, I couldn’t stop smiling, I was that excited. I loved my teammates and appreciated all the effort we put in to win.

In my opinion, one of the most interesting people we [heard from during Four Star Leadership was] Michele Smith. She offered many inspirational stories, especially about her softball injury. She came back pitching three miles per hour faster! I was reminded of my own personal injuries and illnesses, and how I came out [on] the other side. She let us hold her gold medals too. I never felt anything like them before, and it felt, to me, like a little taste of success, even though I am not a sports person.

All in all, I learned more than I thought possible. I came out of Four Star with a greater appreciation for my country, a new perspective of the world and many skills to help me be a better leader and to better serve those around me.

What would you say to inspire future applicants?
I would say just go for it. It never hurts to apply, even if you are unsure. Sometimes, all you need to do is take that first step and a whole new world opens.

There is a great quote from Four Star speaker Jett McCoy that I have on the inside of my locker: “Character is having the strength to fail.” So, what if you fail? Maybe you won’t. You won’t know unless you take the chance.

What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
Now, I am a junior in high school, planning to apply early to the College of William and Mary next fall. I hope to major in American studies, and be able to work and learn right in Williamsburg and Jamestown, the heart of early American history. I found clarity in Oklahoma and I know this is what my path is meant to be. I'm continuing to volunteer at a local historical site, Historic Huguenot Street. I'm proud to say I am serving as president of my 4-H sheep club this year as well. Someday, I'd like to visit Oklahoma again and see friends from Four Star, and perhaps visit Hobart, Oklahoma, again.

Brianna Perez On Excelling During #FourStar17 and Motivating Her Peers

Picture
Brianna Perez is a natural leader. She isn’t afraid to speak and share her ideas with anyone willing to lend a listening ear. During Four Star Leadership’s banquet, keynote speaker and NASSP/MetLife National Principal of the Year Dr. Irving C. Jones, Sr., asked the crowded room for questions. As many students studied the room for brave responders, Perez quickly raised her hand and proudly stood in front of the filled room to ask her question and share her insights. Perez was the winner of the speech writing competition during the 2017 Four Star Leadership program. Daily, she wrote about the impactful messages from keynote speakers and shared how she planned on applying their knowledge to her own life. Perez recently spoke with Four Star Leadership about her time in the program and how she’s continuing to motivate her peers.

How was your experience at Four Star Leadership?
Four Star Leadership was six days that opened my eyes to countless possibilities. Not only did the program grant me the opportunity to fly on a plane for the first time, but also the chance to experience what independent college life would be like without parental guidance. In all honesty, never have I been placed in an atmosphere where everyone is fighting in a rigorous mental competition. With that being said, Four Star was still filled with plentiful amounts of joy and valuable life [experiences] as well as leadership lessons. My experience at Four Star Leadership was unforgettable.

What have been some of your greatest accomplishments since graduating from the Four Star program?
Since graduating from Four Star I have challenged myself to apply what I have learned. For instance, the program tremendously taught me that leadership is built in relationships. My greatest accomplishment since graduating is going back to my hometown and really trying to mend relationships in all organizations I am a part of. That included an increase in listening skills [and] communication.

How have you incorporated the 4 C’s of leadership into your daily life?
Specifically starting with common vision, having a common understanding of purpose in the organizations I am a part of has become a personal goal. I decided to help my NJROTC unit come up with a mission statement to steer our unit into a common vision. Furthermore, caring has also became a major part of my daily life. Each day I strive to stay intentional, active, as well as attentive in present situations. I want to give off the impression that by listening and responding, I care. All-in-all, common vision and caring have been the most influential parts of my life.

What would you say to encourage potential attendees to join Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks?
First and foremost, I won the opportunity of being a part of such a prestigious and life-altering program, but also meeting and understanding General Tommy Frank's legacy. Towards the end of the program, I [received] the honor of [winning] first place in the writing competition. My time spent in Four Star Leadership awarded me [some of] the greatest memories I will ever know.

Upon arrival on the Oklahoma Christian campus you have an opportunity to alter your life experience. I implore you to become who you have always wanted to be.

Angel Macias Revisits #FourStar17 and Shares His Hope for the Future

Picture
Angel J. Macias is not afraid to use his voice. As he prepared to debate with his four teammates during an ethics bowl tournament, Macias slowly leaned in and offered his opinion on the questions being discussed. His confident assertions were always eclipsed by his sincere ability to offer an ear to receive feedback from his team. That’s what so promising about Macias’ character—he’s a skilled leader, a passionate listener and sincerely empathizes with his peers. He recently talked with Four Star Leadership about his new views on the world, his recent trip to the nation’s capital and why high school students should consider joining next year’s program.

How was your experience at Four Star Leadership?
Four Star Leadership has allowed me to view the world from a different perspective. I'm thankful for [the opportunity] to discuss issues with other teenagers. Four Star taught me that disagreeing with someone can be done in a respectful manner and many times, being able to sit down with an individual and have a discussion is the best way to resolve issues.

What have been some of your greatest accomplishments since graduating from the Four Star program?
Since graduating from Four Star I have visited Washington D.C. and was able to discuss issues with other high school students. I used lessons from Four Star Leadership to come to a consensus with an individual on a serious issue affecting America. I have met with my [local] representatives and I have become more engaged in my community. I've been more proactive on issues impacting my community. I also began my second term on my City Youth Council and introduced my peers to new perspectives.

How have you incorporated the 4 C’s of leadership into your daily life?
Yes, I have definitely incorporated the 4 C's in my life! I have successfully done my job as a team member by communicating effectively. Having a common vision and being able to care for others [is an important part of being] in any organization. Lastly, I constantly remind myself to be true to myself by keeping my character!

What would you say to encourage potential attendees to join Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks?
Four Star Leadership is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! This program has allowed me to view issues in a holistic manner. I have learned that my voice matters and that I must work together with others to come to a consensus. This program introduced me to people from all over the world! I made friends with individuals from Jordan (which I'm still in contact with)! We are now exchanging information by sending letters and pieces from our culture, such as candy and art! I also know that I will encounter everyone I met at Four Star again because we all have bright futures! This opportunity will change your life.

How Four Star Helped Alum Riley Juenemann Discover a New Passion

Picture

There are certain individuals born with the innate ability to lead. Riley Juenemann is definitely one of them. After successfully completing her high school career by graduating valedictorian of her class, Juenemann is looking back on her time at Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks and examining how the free program prepared her for success. Soon, Juenemann will be joining Tulane University as a Deans’ Honor Scholarship recipient and expanding her leadership skills through her pursuit of a double major in mathematics and computer science. Learn more about Juenemann’s inspiring Four Star journey, her advice to potential attendees and the Four Star peer who helped her discover a new passion.

How was your experience at Four Star Leadership?
I never could have envisioned the transformation that took place when I was at Four Star. From late night research for the ethics bowl [tournament] to learning invaluable lessons from an Olympic gold medalist, I immersed myself in every aspect of this program. The greatest aspect of the program however, was not a leadership module. Instead, it was my peers. This was the most supportive group of teenagers that I have ever encountered. Everyone’s fascinating accomplishments brought something unique to the table. When I stepped off the plane after my flight home, I had a new sense of self-confidence, a vastly broadened worldview, new lifelong friendships and a cutting-edge leadership tool belt to propel me towards a future of success.

How have you incorporated the 4 C’s of leadership into your daily life?
Communication is a priority in every strong relationship in my life. Common vision is particularly applicable to my music. I play guitar for the Longmont All Star Jazz Band, and without each player and section coming together to turn notes on a page into one cohesive song, we would not be able to share our talent with the audience. Character is entwined in everything that you do. It is not merely how you behave when someone else is watching, but also the standards that you hold yourself to when no one is watching. Character is always on my mind when I am at work. The quality of the job that you do should not depend on whether your boss will be checking it after you are done. Finally, caring shines through whenever I hold doors open to strangers, greet neighbors when shoveling after a winter storm and converse with the individual sitting next to me on the airplane. The conviction that most people are genuine and kind, always intending to do what is right, is significant in that it is the solid foundation of human society. I like to do my part to strengthen this foundation.

What have been some of your greatest accomplishments since graduating from the Four Star program?
While attending the Four Star Leadership program last summer, I met a peer, Emmah Bowers, who talked about the ‘I Run 4 Michael’ program and I fell in love with the concept. Hoping to get my school sports teams involved, I set up a meeting with my high school athletic director to get us started. We then discovered it takes six months to get a match through the formal program. Not to be deterred, I decided instead to launch the ‘Heart of a Warrior Alliance’ program with the goal to pair children in our community who are unable to live an active lifestyle, due to medical reasons, with high school athletic teams. We became involved with a local family with three children who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy that needed to build a house that would accommodate their wheelchairs. Inspired to help, I also met with the athletic director of a neighboring high school, gaining additional support for this cause. Between the two schools, we have raised $3,300 for this family. After uniting surrounding communities as one to aid a deserving family, I have demonstrated to my peer athletes that there is so much more to sports than winning games. Furthermore, the chain of events that I began in my own community demonstrated to me the power of one individual. While I certainly faced roadblocks, they were all worth it when the father of the boys looked me in the eyes, thanked me, and told me that I was an inspiration for his family.

Another one of my greatest accomplishments since leaving the Four Star program has been serving as a lieutenant governor on the Rocky Mountain Key Club District Board. Through the leadership lessons I learned at Four Star, I have grown my high school Key Club chapter fourfold, led fundraisers to raise more than $1000 for UNICEF’s Eliminate Project and helped instill a passion for service in my peers.

Graduating as the valedictorian of my high school class this past May allowed me the opportunity to share some advice for the future with fellow peers, educators and audience members through my speech. Over the course of my senior year, I was named a National Advanced Placement Scholar, a National Merit Commended Student and a Coolidge Scholarship Semifinalist. I am excited to attend Tulane University next year as a Deans’ Honor Scholarship recipient, pursuing a double major in mathematics and computer science while also maintaining my love of performing jazz guitar.

What would you say to encourage potential attendees to join Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks?
Attending Four Star Leadership helped me to recognize that I needed to find a similar peer group and community for my college education. It gave me the confidence that I needed to apply to elite schools and pursue a future that I had once only seen in my dreams. I returned from my week at Four Star feeling like I had finally stepped into the shoes of the person that I was meant to be. This program is exactly what you need to take your leadership to the next level. It will challenge you, but it will change you. Don’t be afraid to take a chance and apply. Instead, be afraid of missing out on this amazing opportunity.
